UKGC Delays Deposit Limit Rules to Autumn 2026

The UK Gambling Commission has pushed back the deadline for Phase 2 of its new remote deposit limit rules from 30 June 2026 to 30 September 2026, giving operators an additional three months to implement the technical enforcement requirements.

What's Changed

The delay affects the second phase of the UKGC's deposit limit overhaul, which governs how operators must technically enforce gross deposit caps across their platforms. Phase 1 — covering customer prompts and visibility requirements — remains on track for 31 October 2025 as originally scheduled.

Under Phase 1, operators must prompt customers to set deposit limits before their first deposit and send six-monthly reminders to review their account information. Limit-setting links must be clearly visible on homepages and deposit pages.

Phase 2, now due by 30 September 2026, introduces stricter technical standards. Only "gross deposit limits" — caps on the total amount paid into an account — can officially carry the label "deposit limit." Other tools such as loss, stake, or net-deposit limits must use different terminology to reduce consumer confusion.

What It Means for Players

Once fully implemented, the rules will mean that when a gross deposit limit is reached, the system must block further deposits until the period resets or a 24-hour cooling-off period passes following a limit increase request. Crucially, any request to decrease a limit must be actioned immediately — no waiting period, no friction.

Operators must also offer flexible free-text financial limits at the account level, rather than forcing players to pick from pre-set amounts.

The rules apply to al UKGC-licensed casinos with remote gambling operators, with subscription lotteries exempt. Players registered with GamStop remain subject to existing self-exclusion protections regardless of the phased rollout.

The practical upshot: standardised, enforceable deposit limits are coming — just three months later than planned.
