The 17th century casino game that is just as popular today - Roulette

Roulette is a game which dates way back to the 17th century, this is not a statement you can make for many casino games. Roulette is a game where a French math genius named Blaise Pascal came up with this game by accident. Blaith came up with it one day when he was trying to create a perpetual motion machine, he was juggling around with the idea of perpetual motion and this is when he came up with what is now known as the Roulette wheel.

The Beginning of Roulette

It wasn’t necessarily created to become a gambling tool as such, since gambling was not that popular in the 17th century, however in 1842 Francois and Louis Blanc decided to add a zero to Pascals wheel which would forever shift the odds to the house’s favour! If you know the game of roulette, you will know the stigma towards the devil since all of the numbers add up to 666, which is said to be another word for the devil. It is thought that either Blaise Pascal, or the Blanc brothers had sold their souls to the devil in return for the secret of the roulette wheel, and this is why the numbers all add up to 666. But there is no true facts of this matter, and let’s face it, it’s a bloomin’ great casino game either way!

You would presume that for such an old game it would have never been so popular nowadays, however it is in fact one of the most popular and go-to gambling games to date with players spinning the roulette wheel via mobile casinos, desktop casinos and of course land based casinos. Roulette can be found in almost every single online casino out there, whether it is online or in a brick and mortar casino, that shiny red and black wheel can be spotted a mile off.

Roulette Variants

Roulette has so many rules and strategies that players may think they know, but in fact when you dive really deep into this game you will unleash a whole new realm of this well known gambling game. As well as having so many layers to the main game of roulette, we have a lot of sub-categories too such as Speed Roulette, French Roulette, American Roulette, European Roulette, and of course one of the big ones Live Roulette. There is such a massive selection for every personality, and every budget so players can feel free to roam around and try each game out till they have found their perfect partner so to speak!

Getting started in the game is simple, you enter the game and find yourself in a beautiful looking computer casino, or in a real life casino if that’s what you prefer. Either way the wheel always looks the same with some minor changes depending on which variant you’re playing. Once you have entered the game you will need to place your bet. The amount of money in which you can win all depends on the odds of winning and the odds of the game, so you can check out the odds table which is usually featured in the top right corner of your game, however this also depends on the provider so just have a gaze around your screen to check out the odds. Before you do place your bet, you should definitely get to know the different types of bets including the Inside Bets and the Outside Bets.

Inside and Outside Bets

Inside bets are bets which are placed on specific numbers in the game, they usually have higher paying odds however not all the time as this depends on which type of Roulette you are playing. The various different kinds of Inside Bets go as follows:

  • Straight Up bet which means you are betting on one number and it pays out 35 to 1
  • Split Betting is when you bet on two numbers paying out 17 to 1
  • Street betting is betting on three numbers paying out 11 to 1
  • Corner betting is when you bet on four numbers and pays out 8 to 1
  • Six Line Betting is betting on six numbers and pays out 5 to 1.

So there are your main Inside Bets, now let’s take a look at the Outside Bets, this type of betting strategy does not include specific numbers and as the name would perceive, they are made on the outside of the game map. Outside Bets go as follows:

  • Colour betting (red or black) pays out 1 to 1
  • Column or betting on 12 numbers pays out 2 to 1
  • Even or odd betting pays 1 to 1
  • Dozen Betting pays out 2 to 1
  • High or Low bets will pay out 1 to 1

Placing your Bets

When you want to place your bets you will be able to do so by placing your chips on the pockets numbered 0-36 on the grid in front of you, but as mentioned before you can also take a whack at the inside and outside bets if you wish. When you are placing bets you can bet on a whole column, and to do this all you need to do is place your bets on the empty pocket under the three columns. If you want to bet on the dozen, select the pocket P12 for the first 12 numbers hence the name dozen, M12 represents the middle numbers, and D12 represents the last 12 numbers. If you are completely fresh and new to the game of roulette then all of this information may seem a little daunting, but don’t worry, it will all become very natural to you once you have played a few times. Remember that nobody was ever born knowing the game of roulette, everyone has to start from somewhere.

Getting the hang of Roulette and how the game works is relatively simple, there are of course many different strategies and ways that people play differently, but you will no doubt find your groove once you have played a few times. It is a very fun and addictive game because it’s one of those top casino games which is an oldie, but no doubt a goldie. Sometimes when you are feeling in a rut and are unsure of what game to have a go on, Roulette is usually the go-to because of its simplicity and pure joy.

Live Roulette

When it comes to live casino roulette, it feels almost like a completely different experience. If you are a player who prefers gambling in a more realistic environment, then Live Roulette is definitely for you. Getting started in the live roulette game is just as easy as the other variants, you enter the game and are greeted by the dealer who can see that you have just stepped into the game.

Most people say it is more of a personal and fun experience because you are live in the action and can see what moves the other players are going for. The rules are exactly the same, and live roulette also comes with the different variants such as Live French Roulette, Live European Roulette, and the list goes on. The top providers have made sure that all of our betting needs have been handled and we can choose whichever style of game we please from the comfort of our own home! This is yet another reason why Roulette is a favourite among many, the pure simplicity of the game and allowing it to be transformed into many different styles of games but keeping that well known edge.
